Townsville Amateur Horse Races

Saturday, August 23rd, a few of us decided to go to the Townsville Amateur Horse Races. This was my first time ever going to a horse race, and it was a great time. The days before the race, my dad was teaching me how to bet on horses! I ended up betting $56 for my dad, and he won $50 back. I also bet $12 for myself, and didn't win anything :( but it was worth the experience. It was such a great time. A lady sat down next to us, and began talking with us. She told us how she was from New Zealand, and that her husband owned one of the horses that were racing. She began telling us what to do in New Zealand and where to go when we go, so that was great! It was such a beautiful day for the horse race. I am so glad that we went! Even though we felt a bit underdressed, because everyone was wearing heels and hair pieces/hats, it was still awesome!

Hiking

Saturday, the Etown gang was pretty bored, so Andrew thought it would be a good idea to go hiking. There is a hill really close to campus, so we decided to hike up it. It was a beautiful day out, a perfect day to hike.

a fire pit, people must have been partying up there because there were many empty cans

the trail wasn't to safe at all, but luckily no one got hurt

So as we were walking, I was leading the group, we were going down a different path than we came up. I thought it would be cool to try a new path, and i felt something touch me. I just thought it was a branch or something, so I brush it off. Well my hand gets caught in it too. That is when I realised that i walked through a HUGE spider web with the spider still in it. I was disgusted. The spider was huge. It was so scary!

Overall, the hike was amazing. It didn't take us too long to hike, maybe an hour or so. But we had a great day. I am really lucky and blessed to be here in Australia at such a great University, with such great friends!

Touch Footy

Touch Footy is one of the sports here on campus. It is played on the width of a football field. The goal is to run the ball across the width, and touch the ball on the ground to score. There are six players on each team on the field at one time. If the opponent touches you, you have to place the ball on the ground, and another player on your team can pick it up. To pass the ball, you have to pass it backwards. If your team is touched six times, the ball then is switched over to the other team. It may sound confusing, but when you watch it, it is pretty easy to understand.

The touch footy finals were Friday night. Uni hall won the semi finals game and advanced to the finals. It was a great game against George Roberts. They were tied 4-4 at the end of full time, and had to go into overtime. Instead of 6v6 on the field, they played 5v5. George Roberts ended up scoring, so Uni hall lost 5-4. But it was still a great game. The different teams get so into it and it gets so intense, so it was really exciting to watch.
